Jump Rope Chants, Revised

(What some little girls would chant if the truth could be told:)

Three, six, nine

you took what’s mine,

I bore your weight on my little girl’s spine.

My hymen broke

I just about choked.

You can forget about Heaven

after you’ve been poked:

my mother told me

if I was good-y

that she would buy me

a rubber dolly

my stepdad told her

he loved me only

now she won’t buy me

a rubber dolly.

Not last night

but the night before,

my abuser came to my bedroom door.

He brought no ice-cream

He brought no cake,

He left me crying with a belly-ache . . .

Mama, Mama, I feel sick,

Call the doctor quick, quick quick!

Doctor, Doctor, will I die?

Close your eyes and multiply . . .

Mother, Mother, I am ill,

Call for the doctor over the hill.

In came the doctor

In came the nurse

In came the lady with the alligator purse.

“Measles,” said the doctor,

“Mumps,” said the nurse.

“Sexual abuse!” cried the lady with the alligator purse.
